This original painting on canvas portrays a surreal urban landscape with angular, overlapping beige buildings, evocative of an abstract city scene. The architecture features stark, linear designs, creating a sense of depth and complexity.
Black windows punctuate the facades, contributing to a mysterious ambience. In the foreground, two figures—a person and a dog—add a touch of narrative and scale to the composition's spatial dynamics.
The background reveals a contrasting red brick building with a vintage Coca-Cola advertisement, adding nostalgia. Street lamps are strategically placed, casting subtle light, enhancing the enigmatic atmosphere.
The limited color palette, predominantly earthy tones with hints of black and red, unifies the piece while emphasizing its geometric precision.
The artwork blends realism with abstraction, inviting viewers to explore its layered structures and hidden stories.
About Carpena
"My art flourishes when boundaries dissolve. By avoiding conventional norms, I create freedom in my work, transforming random patterns and embracing chance.
In this process, I uncover beauty, turning the seemingly disordered into reflections of real life, where every curve and angle tells a story waiting to be discovered. I invite viewers not just to be observers but to be fellow travelers, connecting through the shared language of authenticity and the beauty of the unexpected. "
Carmen Carpena was born and raised in Mexico, where her passion for art and painting was something she unfortunately had to set aside.
Living in a country facing challenges at that time, she was advised by her father to pursue a different career to secure her future. However, her determination to become an artist never wavered. After moving to the United States, she began her journey by focusing on realism in her paintings, but often felt constricted by the rules, shapes, and forms, which turned her passion into something resembling a job.
In a bold move, she chose to follow her heart rather than adhere to others' expectations, recognizing her need for artistic freedom. This decision led her to develop a distinctive style and creative process that often diverges from conventional norms. Her unconventional approach serves as a source of inspiration, allowing people to connect with the sense of freedom that permeates her work.
The perspectives of life profoundly influence her art. She navigates the chaos of unplanned, messy patterns, creating something beautiful and harmonious regardless of the circumstances. Her art style and technique reflect the essence of life itself.
Carmen Carpena emphasizes that we often become blind to the beauty around us when faced with chaos, focusing primarily on the negative aspects.
Finding beauty in uncertainty, she instinctively organizes what is before her, revealing the underlying beauty in her surroundings. Each of her final pieces tells a story, and the process of creating them weaves in rich details that contribute to that narrative.
